In 6th grade English, students will refine their reading, writing, listening, speaking, and critical thinking skills. They will analyze literature and non-fiction texts and expand their knowledge of vocabulary, word origins, and text structure. They will read and discuss documents looking for essential ideas, arguments, and perspectives and they will practice writing skills and develop their writer’s voice. They will utilize technology as a tool and make interdisciplinary connections in their work. Elements of depth and complexity are embedded in all we do.
Students will engage complex text in a variety of genres including short stories, novel studies, poetry, myth, non-fiction, visual text, multimedia, and sources that are student derived and driven. Reading and writing components include grammar, language mechanics, vocabulary development, Greek and Latin roots, and reference skills. The writing process will be practiced throughout the year and students will write narrative, informative/explanatory, and argument pieces. They will engage in research, oral presentations, and creative writing. English texts include McGraw Hill’s StudySync (online textbook: www.connected.mcgraw-hill.com/lausd), literary novels, supplemental readings and multimedia viewings. All instruction is guided by the Common Core State Standards and information about the standards can be found on the California Department of Education’s website. |
