What is STEAM? STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. The end results are students who take thoughtful risks, engage in experiential learning, persist in problem-solving, embrace collaboration, and work through the creative process. These are the innovators, educators, leaders, and learners of the 21st century!
Mission/Vision Statement The Hale Charter Academy STEAM Magnet (HCA STEAM) will provide gifted, highly gifted and high-achieving students with an inspiring, challenging and engaging environment that creates opportunities for research and exploration through project-based learning, as well as emphasizing an interdisciplinary approach through problem-solving, collaboration and academic excellence. Our students will embrace the concept that 21st Century learners are prepared to think critically, make informed decisions, collaborate with others and grow up to be life-long learners as responsible partners in their own learning. At HCA STEAM, our principle goal is to inspire students to grow intellectually, emotionally and socially, fulfill their dreams and become stewards of their community.
Program Description STEAM students will be enrolled in Honors level, accelerated courses that foster their ability to work two years above grade level in academic subjects. We offer a wide variety of exciting and challenging courses to meet the needs of our gifted population including an impressive selection of elective/enrichment courses including Environmental Management, Engineering and Design, Marine Sciences, Coding, Robotics, and the Arts. Students will have the opportunity to continue their learning outside of the classroom with various field trips and competitions--each program created in conjunction with community partners including UCLA, Northrop Grumman, Astro Camp and more!
In alignment with LAUSD's interdisciplinary vision, HCA STEAM students will demonstrate their learning across all disciplines through highly relevant and engaging project-based instruction with an emphasis in science, technology, engineering, the arts, and math. It is our vision that teachers from all disciplines collaborate to develop rigorous tasks that integrate literacy, technology, mathematics, engineering, the arts and other disciplines to ensure well rounded instruction that promotes engaging, phenomena-driven learning. STEAM students will thrive in a student-driven, teacher facilitated environment (both in and out of the classroom), that ensures equity and access to the curriculum for all students. Success will be ensured through the design and implementation of rigorous, hands-on, culturally and linguistically responsive instruction by the highly qualified teaching staff.
